Embracing Imperfections

It was another hot day. One could say it’s just a normal August day, but I feel so imperfect in the face of this normality. I realize that I’m constantly striving for order around me, perfection in my children. Even a simple speck of dust bothers me today. As the writer Ernesto Sabato aptly puts it, he sought Platonic order because he always considered himself imperfect. As he goes on to say, ‘Upon seeing Socrates, a stranger remarked that all vices could be read on his face. I then understood that while that universe was perfect, it was not human, and I have always been, and still am, interested in the human being in flesh and blood.’”

I’ve come to understand that while idealized perfection can make me feel inadequate, true wisdom lies in accepting my imperfections, just as Socrates did. But that doesn’t mean I should stop striving to improve or give up on the process of growth. Embracing who I am also includes the journey of becoming better.
